Oberammergau 2010 - The Passion
Play
Ravaging
Central Europe, the "black death" (bubonic plague) killed hundreds of thousands
of people in 1633. The villagers in the German town of Oberammergau prayed for
relief and vowed to perform a reenactment of the Passion of Christ every ten
years if God would spare them from further loss of life.
On the Feast
of Pentecost in 1634, they performed The Passion Play on a stage erected in the
local cemetery. Thereafter, no one else from the village died from the plague.
Every decade since then, the villagers have faithfully fulfilled their vow by
performing The Passion Play.
Truly, a great spiritual tradition was
born. The cast will consist of over 1000 villagers in 2010. This production
with its dramatic texts, musical score and choral arrangements, exquisite
costumes, staging and lighting is truly a mesmerizing event!
